Developing Communication & Advocacy Skills for Youth
BY RICKY JONES
Sometimes, expressing ourselves, self-advocating, and communicating with others can be difficult, especially for youth with challenges. Our approach is to provide peer-to-peer sessions between successful adult mentors and inspiring transition-age children.
Sessions will be a mix of virtual and in-person discussions and real-life exercises that teach the individual how to effectively and confidently interact with people within the community.
This will help them learn how to have positive, meaningful conversations that do not have to center around their disability. And when they do, they will be prepared to explain their circumstances intellectually.
